Burger King to Launch in SA

Do yourself a favour-fav and Google "funny Burger King pics"

When I think of Burger King I’m immediately reminded of the lame joke my American peers used to tell in primary school:

Why did Dairy Queen fall pregnant?

Because Burger King forgot to wrap his Whopper.

[Insert laugh here]

Cheesy, I know. Kinda like their burgers. See what I did there?

Okay. So the big BK is rumoured to be launching in Johannesburg in October. I’ve heard whispers of two potential sites, one on Grayston Drive in Sandton, the other at the Main & William Nicol intersection in Bryanston which the curio vendors currently occupy. Apparently the terms of the franchise deal with Burger King require that the master franchisee open 20 Burger King quick service restaurants within the first year. Cripes! With Pizza Hut rumoured to be entering the South African market and KFC planning on doubling its African operations to 1200 sites, the competition will be fierce.

I don’t know ’bout y’all, but I’d prefer to see healthier international fast-food chains entering the local market, think Leon (OMFG!),  Camden Food Co., Wasabi and EAT. Or better yet, investment in local fast-food concepts like BeLeaf and Osumo. South Africa’s obesity levels are already staggeringly high and I can’t help but think that the Burger Kings and Pizza Huts of the world will only complicate the issue.

What’s your take?

    1. Food doesn’t make people obese, it’s more the eating but I do get what you’re saying.

My take – It’s good to have international franchises, but sometimes it’s the homegrown SA ‘slow’ food that’s the healthiest.
