Dirty Diana
Leave a commentThis is gadget p*rn to me and I am in love with my new toy; my Diana F + with Instant Back. Instant Back is an attachment that transforms your Diana into an instant camera which takes mini ‘Polaroids’, if you will, like this:
Please excuse the incredibly cuck composition and quality of the photograph I’ve taken of the instant photo, my BlackBerry is on her last legs. Weep. Anyhoo, this little feature is uber awesome as y’all know Polaroid is no more and I believe this is the only instant alternative. There’s something magical about analog and this Bad Boy has a pinhole feature as well as multi and partial exposure, fish-eye, wide-angle, colour-splash, ring-flash and a heap of other radical features. If you demand this for Christmas, Exposure Gallery will hook you up. Or if you can wait until January (I couldn’t), 70 Juta will soon become home to Lomography‘s first standalone store in South Africa. Nice. Oh, and the Diana F + also comes with a selection of coloured gels to tint your photographs, as I did with Kitima in this one.
Ring-flash? Sounds like something The Sharmanator would do.

Do You Give A Duck?
Leave a commentHow many pairs of shoes do you own? A lot, right? Here’s something to chew on: do you know that there are over 7 million children in South Africa who do not own a pair of school shoes? Now you do. I doubt whether most of us could walk to work on a daily basis, let alone barefoot. If you’ve got R100 to spare you can change the life of a child in this country.
The folk at Bobs For Good and Learn to Earn put their heads together and came up with the quacky I Give a Duck campaign, a fun way to raise funds for school shoes and skills development in South Africa in November. I guess it’s the ‘Movember’ that everyone can play. It really couldn’t be easier to make a difference: buy a duck from an official duck dealer listed here, register your duck online and have a quacking November. Or you can take your efforts to another level like these guys at Duckathlon and start your own campaign to raise even more money for these 2 great charities.
I had breakfast at the Bobs For Good offices this week and the lovely Lauren talked me through the cause, the motivation and the great things happening at the foundation. I had a goosebump moment when she mentioned the hundreds of thousands of children who die from and are injured in road accidents each year and how Bobs For Good is tackling this by manufacturing school shoes with reflective strips sewn into the back and front of each pair of shoes. Black River F.C. have taken the initiative a step further by designing a shoe box that folds out into a game and uses a plastic toy car as a mechanic to teach children too young to read the rules of the road. How awesome is that?!
Get quacking, you’ve only got 2 more weeks!

70 Juta Street.
Leave a commentI’m tired. Are you tired? I think my body and mind are officially starting to say noooooooo to 2010. Cripes, it’s been one monster year for all of us. It doesn’t help being invited to, or finding, cool sh*t all the time either. Because generally cool sh*t leads to beer. And we all know what beer leads to… more beer!
A while ago I was introduced to a bright young mind called Adam Levy. This is Adam’s Braamfontein baby and I was fortunate enough to attend the launch on Sunday:
“70Juta is the home base for a collective of artists, designers and shop owners working in inner city Johannesburg. The precinct promotes engagement with the urban landscape and offers a creative platform for events and exhibitions.”
Here for more information on 70 Juta Street, its tenanants, history and future. Oh, and the last image is a collection of mini instant photos taken with an Instamatic camera, on sale at MPhoto, 70 Juta Street, from January. But if like me you have the patience of a mongoose, or is it reflexes, and simply can’t wait until then? MPhoto will hook you up in the shake of a lamb’s tail. My Diana F + with Instant Back in hot pink is en route as we speak, swoon!
Big up Adam, South Africa needs more visionaries like you.

Hello, Sailor.
Leave a commentHappy Guy Fawkes, y’all. Despite what you may think, I chose the 5th of November because it’s easy to remember, not because I want to debut with a bang. After some arm-twisting by The Social Strategist I decided to move my bloglet from Blogspot to WordPress. So here she is. I’ve added some new bits like the fun tag thingie, search capability, subscription and all things shareable. I’m sure there are a few formatting gremlins lurking but in time she’ll function like a well-oiled machine. Or at least I hope so. Some of my gorgeous friends have paid homage to Brandslut in pictures…

Apparently Bloomberg did this by jumping around his bedroom, naked, with his bicycle light

The Source of Visual Inspiration has played out of his boots, again - www.millimetredesign.blogspot.com
Thanks Team for your antics and enthusiasm, it means the world to me!

Hello, Dear Reader.
Leave a commentWelcome to Brandslut. If you’ve found me because of Google or another search engine, allow me to introduce myself, albeit prematurely. I currently live at www.brandslut.blogspot.com and I’m in the process of switching platforms to this new blogger-friendly format at www.brandslut.co.za. If you’ve found me it means search engine optimisation (SEO) works and I’ve proved my point. SEO gets me all excited and you now understand why. In the meanwhile, please excuse any minor glitches and formatting gremlins – this site is still under construction (every gal loves a hard-hat and a drill). Please peruse my previous articles, and look forward to shiny new content as of November 5th.
Remember, remember, the 5th of November.

The Greens
Leave a commentLying in bed last night perusing the Taste Magazine, chocolate Steri Stumpie in hand, I stumbled upon a little blurb about Woolies opening its first eco-friendly store within the Palmyra Shopping Centre in Claremont, Cape Town. I can’t find more detail online, but the article detailed how the retailer has used green building practices, energy recycling techniques, grey-water systems and the use of natural air and light to conserve energy. The new eco-friendly store opens on October 28th. I agree that Woolies has some work to do on improving the carbon footprint of its packaging, but I think this is a pioneering move in terms of retail and I hope Pick n’ Pay, SPAR and Checkers follow suit. Now if only I could convince the gyms in South Africa to power their facilities with the energy generated from bicycles and treadmills.
I’ve got my new eco-friendly reusable ceramic mug from vida e caffe. Do you?

Woolworths Living Wall
Leave a commentClick here to plant a free virtual seedling in aid of World Food Day on October 16th and uniting against hunger. For every virtual seedling planted, Woolworths will plant a real plant at a school in South Africa with a permaculture food garden. Do it NOW, you’ve got no excuse!
